Site Architecture

Site architecture is how many clicks it takes to reach a page from your homepage — and shallower is better, because pages buried deep get crawled less often by search engines and found less easily by visitors.

Why it matters for your site

Search engines crawl deep pages less frequently. A page five clicks down from the homepage may be visited by crawlers rarely — so your updates take longer to show up in search, and new pages buried that deep can take a long time to appear at all.

Every extra click also loses people. Content buried several levels deep is content most visitors never reach, however good it is. If something matters to your business, it shouldn't take a treasure hunt to find it.

There's a third, quieter cost: the authority your homepage and top pages build up flows through internal links, and it weakens with every hop. Pages far from the top inherit little of that strength, so they tend to rank weaker — a structural disadvantage that has nothing to do with the quality of the page itself.

How to check it yourself

  1. Pick an important page — a key product, service, or article. Starting from your homepage, count the clicks it takes to reach it. Three or fewer is healthy; beyond that is worth a look.
  2. Check that your high-value pages are reachable from the homepage or main navigation, not only through several layers of sub-pages.
  3. Where important content sits too deep, flatten the path: add a direct link from a prominent page, surface it in your navigation, or restructure an over-nested section.

Technical detail

Click depth (how many links it takes to reach a page from the homepage) is distinct from URL depth (how many slashes are in the address). Search engines care more about click depth — how reachable a page is by following links — than about how the URL string is structured.

'Crawl budget' is the number of pages a search engine will crawl on your site in a given window. It mainly matters for large sites, where deep pages compete for limited budget and can be crawled infrequently or missed entirely. Keeping important pages shallow helps ensure they're seen and refreshed.

Nielsen Norman Group's research on flat versus deep hierarchies finds flatter structures generally make content more discoverable — but extremely flat structures with overcrowded menus carry their own usability cost. The aim is a sensible balance, not the flattest tree possible.
